Theory of Action
"Dr. St. Amand believes that fibromyalgia is the result of an
inherited biochemical abnormality resulting in poor excretion of
certain substances. When analyzing 24 hour urine samples from fibromyalgia patients, before and after treatment with guaifenesin, he found that after treatment, excretion of phosphate had increased significantly and there was also a moderate increase in oxalate excretion. This led Dr. St. Amand to theorize that fibromyalgia sufferers fail to process substances properly that should be excreted by the kidneys. He believes this is probably due to deficiency of an enzyme or enzymes involved in this process. According to Dr. St. Amand, the symptoms of fibromyalgia are a result of the accumulation
of the excess of phosphate and oxalate within the body's cells. This leads to impairment of energy production within the mitochondria andmay also directly cause the pain and stiffness in the muscles and soft tissue experienced in the illness. Dr. St. Amand does stress however that his theory is subject to further research and that other biochemical abnormalities in fibromyalgia patients have been noted by other researchers. Whatever the exact mechanism, the guaifenesin protocol is currently regarded as one of the most successful treatment approaches for fibromyalgia."
